39-47 East Road

Catalyst for urban greening
Public realm improvements provide a catalyst for new borough-wide green infrastructure and ecological corridors.

Re-development of the site will provide an opportunity to improve the public realm in the immediate area and act as a catalyst for a future vision to extend green infrastructure from Old Street up East Road, to Shoreditch Park and Regents Canal to create an ecological corridor of squares and parklets.

The proposals seek to pedestrianise the adjacent Silbury Street to strengthen pedestrian links and retain historic yorkstone steps, listed bollards and reuse heritage granite setts to provide a new public realm with urban greening and seating opportunities.
The design also proposes to remove sections of the highway to offer a more generous pedestrian route with improved biodiverse planting, SuDS, street trees and parklets, redefining streets as places for people and improving air quality.
